Range Rules and Regulations
The 4 Universal Firearms Safety Rules
1. Treat every weapon as if it were loaded.
2. Never point a weapon at anything you do not intend to shoot - Know your target and its background.
3. Keep your weapon on safe until you are ready to fire.
4. Keep your finger straight and off the trigger until you intend to fire.
To discharge your firearm you must
1. Have a target - Know your target.
2. Sight alignment and sight picture.
3. Conscious decision to destroy your target.

Common MTC Range rules:
- Recreational shooting times:
- Suppressed weapons: Sunup till sundown.
- Unsuppressed weapons: 0800 till 1900.
- Respect the facility. Malicious destruction of property will result in a permanent ban from the property.
- Use the universal firearms safety rules ALWAYS. Gross violations may result in a permanent ban from the property.
- No guests are allowed without prior approval from the Marksmanship Training Center.
- Raise the RED range hot flag prior to using any range. Lower when range goes cold.
- Firearms are to be loaded on the firing line with the weapon pointed down range.
- Use of eye and ear protection is mandatory. The wearing of long sleeves, pants, and baseball cap is recommended.
- Anyone may call “cease fire” when any unsafe condition occurs.
- Every round you fire must strike inside the designated impact area downrange.
- Use appropriate ammo and firearms on designated targets and ranges.
- Use ball ammo on steel targets on the 25, 50, 100 yard ranges. Minimum distance of 10 yards for handgun, 100 yards for carbines.
- Impact velocity must be below 3000fps for steel targets on all ranges - know your ballistic data.
- Absolutely no steel core, AP or SLAP rounds on steel targets. (including 5.56 green tips)
- Big bore shooters will use paper targets in the 100 yard bay to zero. Designated BMG square steel targets located on Range #1 at 300y, 550y, 700y and 1050 yards.
- Wildlife are not authorized targets.
- If there is no Range Officer on duty:
- Use the range at your own risk during posted operating times of day.
- All shooters are to remain behind the firing line while range is hot.
- Unload all firearms while range is cold.
- DO NOT touch or manipulate your weapon or sights while the range is cold.
- Parents must supervise ALL dependents at ALL times.
- Maintain a 1 guardian to 1 dependent ratio while engaged in ANY firearms handling.
- Act as coach, mentor, and safety officer for dependent – Providing your undivided attention toward enforcing proper safety and marksmanship fundamentals.
- Clean up after yourself. Leave the facility in a better state than when you arrived.
- Keep off the berms. Impact and side berms are for your protection and are extremely expensive to repair after erosion.
- Check range availability prior to coming to the range. Agencies may often “reserve” ranges. Scheduled competitions and training have priority over recreational shooting.
MTC Range specific rules:
Range #1 (primary long range) rules:
- Raise the RED range hot flag prior to using any range, and lower when range goes cold.
- Raise/lower the BLACK range flag prior to/after any down range movement. Also use “Personnel Down Range” sign.
- Remember stow all flags and down range sign when vacating the range.
- Ranges #1 and #2 both need to go cold for any down range movement.
- Reserved ranges have the right of way. Recreational shooting yields to scheduled training and competitions.
- Clean up after yourself.
- Take paper zero targets with you.
- Clear the firing line of barricades & props.
- Repaint targets as needed.
- Steel head and torso targets = 30 caliber and below.
- Steel square targets and paper targets = any caliber.
- You may load/unload gear in loading zone, but park your vehicle in the MTC parking lot.
Range #2 (secondary long range) rules:
- Raise the RED range hot flag prior to using any range, and lower when range goes cold.
- Raise/lower the BLACK range flag prior/after any down range movement. Also use “Personnel Down Range” sign.
- Remember stow all flags and down range sign when vacating the range.
- Ranges #1 and #2 both need to go cold for any down range movement.
- Reserved ranges have the right of way. Recreational shooting yields to scheduled training and competitions.
- Clean up after yourself.
- Repaint targets as needed.
- Steel targets = 30 caliber and below.
Range #3 (25y bay), #4 (25y bay), #5 (25y bay), #8 (50y bay) rules:
- Raise the RED range hot flag prior to using any range, and lower when range goes cold.
- Target stands for cardboard/paper, along with steel targets available in the target shed for recreational use.
- Clean up after yourself.
- Return targets and barricade/props.
- Repaint targets as needed.
- Steel targets:
- Pistol ammo only (non magnum).
- Minimum of 10 yards.
- Paper targets = No restrictions.
Range #6 (shoot house) rules:
- CQB House is not for recreational use.
- For authorized training with approved trainers / Range Safety Officers only.
Range #7 (vehicle dynamics bay) rules:
- Raise the RED range hot flag prior to using any range, and lower when range goes cold.
- Put up safety chain between Range #5 and #6 when vehicle bay is in use.
- Use vehicles as props at your own risk. You may shoot from inside, outside, around or under.
- DO NOT SHOOT ANY PART OF THE VEHICLES! Bullets deflect in unpredictable erratic angles/directions when shooting through mediums which will likely impact dangerously outside the range. This training is only to be conducted in a supervised controlled manner with approved trainers / Range Safety Officers only.
- Shoot only within boundaries, never towards the range entrance.
- Target stands for cardboard/paper, along with additional steel targets available in the target shed for recreational use.
- Clean up after yourself.
- Return targets and barricade/props.
- Repaint targets as needed.
- Steel targets:
- Pistol ammo only (non magnum).
- Minimum of 10 yards.
- Paper targets = No restrictions.
Range #9 (100y bay) rules:
- Raise the RED range hot flag prior to using any range, and lower when range goes cold.
- Target stands for cardboard/paper, along with steel targets available in the target shed for recreational use.
- Clean up after yourself.
- Return targets and barricade/props.
- Take paper zero targets with you.
- Steel targets:
- Pistol ammo (non magnum) - Minimum of 10 yards.
- Rifle ammo (less than 3000fps) - Minimum of 100 yards.
- Paper targets = No restrictions.
Range #10 (250y Small Bore Sniper) rules:
- Raise the RED range hot flag prior to using any range, and lower when range goes cold.
- ABSOLUTELY NO CENTER FIRE! Rim fire and small caliber air rifles only.
- Clean up after yourself.
- Take paper zero targets with you.
- Return temporary targets and barricade/props.
- Repaint targets as needed.
