Course Overview

This two-day precision rifle course is built specifically for hunters and shooters who want to extend their effective range responsibly and confidently apply precision rifle skills in real hunting environments. The course emphasizes strong fundamentals, accurate data collection, and practical field application—bridging the gap between controlled range shooting and ethical hunting scenarios.

Day One establishes the foundation. Students will properly set up their rifle and optics, establish a repeatable zero, select appropriate ammunition, and collect critical rifle and ammunition data using a chronograph. Instruction covers marksmanship fundamentals, ballistic theory, ballistic software setup, wind basics, and spotting techniques. Students will build individual ballistic profiles, validate ballistic solutions at distance, and true their data through live fire to ensure reliable, repeatable performance.

Day Two focuses on applying Day One skills to realistic hunting situations. Students will use their validated rifle data and ballistic profiles to engage targets from field-relevant positions and terrain. Emphasis is placed on making ethical, high-probability shots rather than ideal range setups. Instruction reinforces dialing versus holding, practical wind calls, and efficient management of rifle data in the field.

Instructors will actively guide students through shooting from non-prone and improvised field positions, including kneeling, sitting, standing, and supported shooting using tripods, packs, shooting sticks, and natural terrain. Students will receive hands-on coaching on body position, stability, support selection, and recoil management for each position. The goal is to help shooters understand how to build the most stable position possible based on terrain, distance, and shot opportunity—just as they would in a real hunting environment.

Scenarios are designed to reflect common hunting encounters and reinforce good judgment.

By the end of the course, students will not only understand how to gather accurate ballistic data, but how to apply it confidently and ethically in real-world hunting situations.
Prerequisites:
  • There are no prerequisites, but our Long Range Introductory Course (LR1) in highly recommended.
  • Physical ability: Students must be able to safely get into prone, sitting, and standing shooting positions as well as carry all their hunting equipment in and out of the field.

Mandatory Gear Requirements:
  • Rifle/Optic (Rifle and optic, zeroed prior to class)
    • Bipods.
    • Rear support shooting bag.
    • Optic should ideally have adjustable turrets and/or a reticle capable of elevation and wind holds.
    • Rifle brakes are acceptable
    • Suppressors are recommended. (If you need a note for your wife so you can purchase a new suppressor for class that can also be provided on request.)
  • Ammunition: 100 rounds of the same ammunition. (Preferably Quality Match grade Type Ammunition)
  • Pack to carry gear.
  • Students are expected to understand how to safely operate their firearm when they arrive.
Recommended Gear: Do not purchase equipment specifically for this class — bring what you already have.
  • Rain gear
  • Sunscreen / bug spray
  • Extra ammunition of the same type
  • Tripod and/or shooting sticks
  • Spotting scope
  • Binoculars
  • Rangefinder
  • Shooting mat

NOTE ON RIFLE SELECTION FOR CLASS
While this is a hunting preparation class, heavy-recoiling rifles (magnum calibers) are not recommended. A smaller-caliber, easy-to-shoot rifle is ideal for learning and applying the techniques taught in this class.

That said, your preferred hunting rifle is welcome, provided you can safely and effectively shoot it in the positions and manner required for this class.

If you have questions regarding rifle selection, please contact the instructor.
  • Front and rear support
    • Front support should preferably be a bipod.
    • Rear support should be a tactical-style rear bag (not a benchrest-style “ear” bag).
  • A pack capable of carrying required gear and usable as rifle support in certain shooting positions.
  • A minimum of 100 rounds of the same match-quality ammunition. This class is designed around a lower round count to accommodate lightweight hunting-style barrels. More is always better if you want to shoot scenarios more than once if time permits.
  • Eye and ear protection.
  • Physical ability: Students must be able to safely get into prone, sitting, and standing shooting positions.
  • Ballistic software installed on a device suitable for field use. Only need 1 on your device Instructors will be using Applied Ballistics and GeoBallistics on mobile devices and Kestrels.
  • Note-taking materials for both classroom instruction and field work.
  • Any tools required to adjust your optic if needed. Instructors will have tools available, but students are encouraged to bring their own.
  • Bullet data for the ammunition being used during class. IE: Grain weight and B.C.

Students and Instructors Successful Hunts.
